Research

I work with microbial genomics, using nucleic acid-based methods to study the ecophysiology of microbial communities. I have worked with cable bacteria, the deep marine subsurface, indoor airborne microbial communities, electroactive microorganisms, organohalide respiration, and more.

Teaching activities

I am course responsible for the first-year bachelor course "Biological Research in Theory and Practice" (BFTP). I teach a data visualisation module in the second-year course "Programming and Statistics for Biologists". At the MSc level, I teach the characterisation of microbial communities using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing in "Microbial Element Cycling and Population Ecology" and the genomics module of "Molecular Microbiology". I occasionally teach a PhD course "Visualisation of Biological Data".
