Research

I work as Professor in Digital Aesthetics and Culture at Aarhus University where I lead the Digital Aesthetics Research Centre (DARC). I am also a founding co-director of the Environmental Media and Aesthetics research program in the school of Communication and Culture. In 2021 I was elected as member of Academia Europaea in the section on film, media, and visual culture. Some of my published books include Insect Media (2010), Digital Contagions (2007/2016), What Is Media Archaeology? (2012), A Geology of Media (2015), and Operational Images (2023). I am the co-author of The Lab Book: Situated Practices in Media Studies (2022) as well as the recent book, Living Surfaces: Images, Plants, and Environments of Media (2024). I have co-edited several books, such as Photography Off the Scale (2021) as well as special issues for journals such as Journal of Visual Culture and Cultural Politics.  My books have been translated into 11 languages including Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Czech, Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

In addition to writing, I work as curator, including as part of the curatorial team of transmediale 2023 and Helsinki Biennial 2023, as well as the co-curator of the recent Motores del Clima (Laboral, Gijon, 2023-2024) that followed up from the Weather Engines exhibition (Onassis Stegi, Athens, 2022). As part of that project, we also co-edited a volume on the political ecology of weather, Words of Weather that is available in English, Greek, Chinese, and Spanish.

Teaching activities

I primarily teach at the department of Digital Design and Information Studies at Aarhus University, including courses such as Software Studies, and Data and Digital Culture but also in areas such as cultural theory, transdisciplinary methods, environmental humanities, media archaeology and media theory, digital aesthetics, art and science collaborations, etc.

I also supervise PhD students in those and related areas with extensive PhD supervision (and examination) experience internationally.

I have teaching experience in Higher Education for over 20 years in five countries.

I give regular invited lectures and keynotes on my research areas internationally.

Collaborations

I regularly collaborate with non-academic partners for example in the art, design, and museum sectors. This includes my work as a curator as well as other activities that qualify as impact as well as dissemination.

A good example of our past activities is the Environmental Audiotour we were commissioned to do for the Helsinki Biennial 2023:
